Between 1904 and 1914, James Joyce labored over A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, arguably one of the best and most significant novels of the twentieth century. Between 1914 and 1915, it appeared serially in the periodical, The Egoist. The novel appeared in book form on December 29, 1916.
