Apparently, everyone from Johnson to Dickens to Yeats drank here. It’s definitely worth popping into for a half of bitter.

Note the adjacent building. A wag in the Cheshire Cheese once spun us a tale that Mary, Queen of Scots had been imprisoned in that building. In truth, the building is called “Mary, Queen of Scots House, ” and it features a lovely of Queen Mary over its door,  but it wasn’t built until 1905. Apparently, it was built to house an insurance company.
